Our main reason for the shift of watercress production from our UK farms to southern Europe and America, is that of the colder winter climate experienced in both Dorset and Hampshire. This dramatically slows down plant growth, so much so that it takes the watercress plant three times as long to grow than in the summer months. The UK consumers love of watercress demands all year round supply and has done so for over 20 years, hence the need for overseas production in warmer climates.
UK production ends in November. We have two farms in Jerez, Southern Spain, and watercress is grown here from September through to May. Our smaller American farm in Florida grows watercress to back up European supply in case of severe weather conditions and to ensure our customers can enjoy quality watercress all year round. |
